Queensland Police Dog Dies After Chasing Car Thief

Police Dog Waco, an eight-year-old German Shepherd, and his handler, a senior constable, were following an offender who had stolen a car in Deception Bay, north of Brisbane, on Thursday afternoon about 1:30 p.m. when the police dog became unsteady on his feet and showed signs of heat stress. In a statement released on Friday, the Queensland Police Service announced PD Waco passed away just before 5am the following day despite vets doing everything they could. “Despite attempts to lower his body temperature and replace his fluids, PD Waco sadly passed away just before 5am today,” the statement read. Queensland Police said Waco’s handler, a senior constable described as “very experienced”, was devastated at the loss of his partner. “The QPS takes the health and wellbeing of all police dogs very seriously and see them as valued members of the police family.” Deception Bay sweltered at 30C by 10am on Thursday.
