Timber, retired Hillsboro police dog, euthanized

Officers with the Hillsboro Police Department said goodbye to one of their own this week, after one of the agency’s police dogs was put down following a long illness. Timber, a 5-year-old a German shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix, was euthanized Wednesday, April 4 due to an ongoing medical issue. Before the dog was put down, officers with the department held a last call memorial ceremony in the dog’s honor, according to police spokesman Lt. Henry Reimann. Timber served with the Hillsboro Police Department for two years before he retired earlier this year. He and his human partner Officer Mike Lee helped capture 41 suspects during Timber’s time with the agency, according to the department. In a post on Twitter, Hillsboro Police said Timber was “an integral part of the local police canine community.” Timber was born in Israel and purchased by Hillsboro Police from a local law enforcement partner agency in 2016. “Timber’s willingness to work combined with his love for affection made him a perfect fit for HPD and the Hillsboro community in which he will serve,” police wrote in a statement introducing Timber two years ago. Timber was one of two police dogs in the department to receive a bullet-proof vests last year. The vest was donated by the Massachusetts-based charity Vested Interest in K9s Inc.Timber’s death comes three months after another dog with the department’s canine unit died in a car crash. Billy, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, died in December 2017 after the patrol car he was in was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Century Boulevard and Tualatin Valley Highway.
