Police Service Dog ‘Riley’ Loses Cancer Battle
Died 10/6/15
Handler – Constable Jeff Katcher
It’s a tough day for Winnipeg police. One of the dogs in their K9 unit has died from cancer Oct 6. Riley was five years old and had been working with Constable Jeff Katcher since 2012. K9 unit trainer Patrol Sgt. Wally Antoniuk says it’s tough to describe the pain Katcher is feeling right now.“Unfortunately I can speak from experience, having to had put down my first police dog. It’s incredibly hard to describe. You spend so much time with this dog. They’re with you 24 hours a day. You work with them and then you take them home. You’re always caring for them, they’re always on your mind,” he says. Riley was diagnosed in May and had three tumors removed before losing the fight. He’s the first dog from the Winnipeg Police breeding program to ever die from cancer. He fathered 9 pups last September.
