Tucson Police announce passing of beloved retired K9 ‘Oni’

The Tucson Police K-9 Unit announced the passing of retired K-9 Oni.According to TPD, K9 Oni first joined the unit in 2018 and became dual certified in patrol and narcotic shortly after. TPD says that for a long time, Oni was the only German Shepherd and the largest dog in the unit. They say he was a ‘big boy’, but was also known for the size of his heart – often doing public demonstrations as he was very gentle with people.Throughout his career Oni reportedly logged 718 deployments, 292 arrests, 10 narcotics seizures, and 49 SWAT operations.TPD says that one of Oni’s most memorable deployments was with the SWAT team, on the Fourth of July, when he helped to apprehend an armed robbery suspect, and was chased down by Oni along with Air Support and SWAT.
