Cayce police dog passes away at home with handler, cause of death unclear
A Cayce Department of Public Safety police dog passed away Wednesday night, according to a tweet from the law enforcement agency. “It is with heavy heart that we mourn the loss of K-9 Maverick, who become (sic) unresponsive last night,” the tweet read. The canine was at home and not working when he passed, according to the tweet. His handler was at home at the time of the incident. Officials are performing a necropsy on Maverick to determine his cause of death, department spokesman SFC Evan Antley said. The department expects to receive results from testing next week. K-9 Maverick had the right amount of water, food, shelter and shade prior to his death, according to a statement from the department. His handler checked on him three or four hours before his death. “We ask that you keep his handler and our department in your prayers,” the tweet read. The Cayce Department of Public Safety began its K-9 program in late 2016, according to an article previously published by The State.
