Police dog Diesel passes away, remembered for ‘legacy of service, love, and loyalty’
The Integrated Canine Service is remembering Victoria Police Service Dog (PSD) Diesel, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 14.The German Shepherd died on Saturday, March 29, after a distinguished career with the Victoria Police K-9 unit, according to the Canine Service. He was trained for general duty as well as drugs and firearms searches and lived with his handler, VicPD Const. Eric LeQuesne, and LeQuesne’s family, when off the job.“PSD Diesel transitioned from a patrol dog to a loving family member. He spent his retirement days enjoying walks, belly rubs, fetch, and the quiet joys of a relaxing and restful home life.Diesel was with VicPD for several years.He made the news in 2017, when he and his team tracked down a home invasion suspect, which led to one man’s arrest. This person subsequently faced seven criminal charges.“PSD Diesel had a hand in countless arrests while working the streets in Victoria,” the Canine Service wrote in the social media post, which was met with public condolences. “(He) also located multiple kilograms of drugs throughout his decorated career.”Additionally, roughly a decade ago, Diesel won first overall in tracking and was a national champion in the 2015 Canadian Police Canine Association trials.Now, the Canine Service remembers him for his “legacy of service, love, and loyalty,” adding in the post, which included various photos, “Though he may no longer be by our side, his paw prints will forever remain on our hearts.”The Greater Victoria-based service is a specialized police dog unit comprising the Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay police departments. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering round-the-clock services to police operations. “Rest easy, PSD Diesel,” it added.
