Former Yakima police dog Dexter died at age 9
Dexter, a retired Yakima police dog, died Friday from illness, according to Yakima police. Dexter, a 9-year-old German shepherd, served in the police department for six years, retiring in May. “He was one of the more outstanding dogs,” said Lt. Shawn Boyle. “You could take him around kids and things.” But he was also a dedicated police dog, Boyle said. Dexter is credited with apprehending about 100 suspects in 300 deployments. Dexter was also involved in several operations with the department’s SWAT team. Born in Germany, Dexter spent his career with Officer Mark McKinney, who purchased Dexter from the city when the dog was retired. McKinney is currently the handler for the department’s new police dog, Trex.
