Westford Police Department pays tribute to K9 Beny

A solemn tribute in Westford today, to mark the service and passing of a retired K9. K9 Beny served with the Westford Police Department from 2011 to 2020. In a post to social media, Westford Police said Beny was 13 and had been in failing health. “Beny was an invaluable partner to K-9 Officer Peladeau where the two forged a bond that helped them become a highly effective K-9 team.” said Westford Police in their post. “Many times they were called by other departments when they needed the assistance of a K-9.” Beny, a German Shepherd, was imported from Germany, and was trained in patrol, and explosives. “The list of accomplishments, finds, saves and assists could probably fill a book,” Police said Beny once located a missing woman in Dunstable when temperatures were at 0 degrees and two feet of snow was on the ground. Beny found the woman in a hypothermic state, and because of Beny’s keen sense, she survived. Beny also worked the Boston Marathon bombing scene in 2013. “The police department would like to send a sincere thank you to the Littleton Animal Hospital for their care and compassion in helping to ease Beny’s suffering.” said Westford Police in their post. “We would also like to thank the Littleton, MA Police Department for their assistance today.” Officers stood by and saluted as Beny made his last ride on Monday.
