Seneca County Sheriff’s Office mourns the passing of retired K-9 Ben
The Seneca County Sheriff’s office reports the passing of retired K-9 Ben. K-9 Ben retired from police service in September of 2024 after serving this community with distinction for many years with his handler, retired Sergeant John Fowler. We sincerely appreciate K-9 Ben’s dedication to duty throughout his career.K-9 Ben was a German Shepard born in Holland. Ben was “green” or “untrained” when he arrived in the United States and shortly thereafter began his training.His handler, Sergeant John Fowler met up with Ben in the Fall of 2017 and together they both went through 6 weeks of training in bomb detection and patrol work.Ben was trained and certified in the following areas:
• Bomb Detection
• Criminal Apprehension
• Building search
• Area search
• Article/Package search
• Tracking
• Handler Protection
Ben was also certified in Patrol/Tracking and Explosive Detection by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, Bureau of Municipal Police.
