K9 Barry – Sacramento, California

Died – 9/3/20
Handler – Deputy Gibson

On August 27, 2020, K9 Barry (0K96) was taken into the veterinarian after his handler noticed he was not his usual rambunctious self. After being seen by several caring veterinarians and specialists, he was diagnosed with Pheochromocytoma (a rare form of cancer; tumor attached to the Adrenal Gland). Due to the location of the tumor, which was pressing into his spine, surgery was not recommended as the odds of surviving the procedure were very slim. Within a week K9 Barry had lost use of his rear legs, had no bowl or bladder control, and was in severe pain. On September 03, 2020, K9 Barry, surrounded by his family and fellow K9 teams, he was laid to rest. K9 Barry, a feisty Belgian Malinois, was born April 1, 2018 in the Czech Republic. K9 Barry, a dual purpose K9 (trained in detection and protection) was teamed up with a new handler, Deputy Gibson. In November of 2019, K9 Barry and Deputy Gibson were patrol certified and were excited to serve the community and citizens of Sacramento. During his short time in patrol, K9 Barry had over 80 searches and 35 finds, surrenders, and apprehensions as well as several article finds (firearms, magazines, ammunition). K9 Barry was an amazing working dog and his energy and enthusiasm for his work was second to none. At home K9 Barry led a leisurely life of playing fetch, swimming (and playing fetch), laying by the fire pit (and playing fetch), doing yard work with his partner (and playing fetch), lounging on his bed (and playing fetch), and taking long walks (and playing fetch). Your energy, loyalty, companionship, fearlessness (with the exception of that one scary broken vase with a fake flower), drive, and protection will be sorely missed. K9 Barry, your family, fellow K9 teams, and community will miss you. Rest in peace.
