K9 Beno – Manistee County, Michigan

K9 Beno – Died – 7/23/19
Handler – Deputy Brandon Gillispie

Manistee Co. K-9 hit by car; dies

It is with a heavy heart that I inform our community of the unexpected loss of one our very own. Beno, our beloved K-9 who had just finished his shift a few hours prior, was accidentally hit by a passing motorist last evening at approximately 9:30 pm in Dickson Township. Beno died at the scene. Beno, a 2 year old German Shepherd was born in Lask’ Poland. He began his police training at the early age of 13 months. He was assigned to his new handler Deputy Brandon Gillispie at the Basic Police Canine Handler Course conducted at Mid-Michigan Police K-9 LLC. Upon successful completion of the program on June 14, 2018, Beno received certifications in patrol work that included Tracking, Narcotics Detection, Apprehension, and Evidence Recovery. Beno and his handler shared a love for one another that was truly “something special” to witness. In just over a year of working together, the bond of loyalty they built together was quite evident. That bond grew stronger and stronger by the constant, continuous training and working relationship they had established. Beno was called out on several occasions to assist our neighboring law enforcement communities as well. He touched the lives of so many in just a short period of time. Not only was he a great K9 who served the citizens of Manistee County well in his working capacity, but he also represented the agency by showing his social side with visits he made to our local schools, retirement homes, and area events. Without question, Beno had a special place in the heart of our community. This unexpected accident has left a void in our hearts amongst my staff, our law enforcement partners, county officials, and our community. Our deepest condolences go out to Deputy Gillispie and his family as they grieve the loss of his partner, co-worker, and best friend.
