La Porte police, community mourn the loss of service dog Rambo after fight with cancer

It is with profound sadness that the La Porte Police Department announces the passing of Police Service Dog Rambo “Bo” on Friday, March 15, 2019, after a courageous battle with lymphoma cancer. Rambo served the department for 5 years as a dual-purpose narcotics and patrol utility canine. Rambo, a German Shepherd Dog/Belgian Malinois mix, was born in the country of Belgium in 2012. He was acquired by the department in 2013 from Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania, and was assigned to handler La Porte Police Specialist Matt Drangmeister. The duo trained with Midwest K9 and was certified through the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers and hit the streets of La Porte in late December 2013. During Rambo’s law enforcement career he completed 446 vehicle free-air sniffs resulting in 88 drug arrests. He also had 9 criminal apprehensions, recovered both discarded stolen property and evidence on several occasions. The La Porte Police Department would like to thank the community for the generous outpouring of love and support shown to Rambo during his lifetime, along with their support for the department’s K9 Program. We’d also like to acknowledge the following for the exceptional care and generosity extended to Rambo and all of our K9’s on a continuing basis;

Lastly, but most importantly, we thank Specialist Matt Drangmeister and his wife, Patty, for providing Rambo a devoted and loving home.
