Portland Police K-9 dies after bout with cancer
Portland Police announced Thursday one of its police dogs has died after battling an aggressive form of cancer. Nikko was a drug detection dog assigned to the bureau’s Drugs and Vice Division. Officials said in the last seven years, Nikko and his partner, Officer Scott Groshong, were responsible for finding 215 pounds of cocaine, 246 pounds of meth, 86 pounds of heroin and 2,600 pounds of marijuana. The street value of those drugs was more than $4.2 million.Nikko was born in Holland in 2006 and was originally a patrol and drug detection dog in Kansas City, Kansas. Officials said because of his mild temperament he was unable to perform as a patrol dog, so he was sold to the Portland Police Bureau in 2008. In a statement, Officer Groshong said his partner will be missed. “Nikko was a big part of my personal and professional life.” No service or memorial is planned.
