Retired Newton police K-9 dies after medical emergency

The Newton Police Department says a retired K-9 officer has died after suffering a sudden medical emergency on Tuesday. Bella was 9 years old. NPD said Bella’s career began in 2015 as a certified patrol and narcotics detection K-9 in the patrol division with her handler, Sgt. Tony Hawpe. She retired in January as Sgt. Hawpe transitioned to the department’s investigations division. “She had a positive impact not only on patrol, but during many public demonstrations and community events,” Newton police said on Facebook. “She was a social media darling on her Facebook page (Cpl. Hawpe and K-9 Bella). We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Newton Animal Hospital staff and Dr. Tonn for their great attention and comforting care for PSD Bella in her greatest time of need.”
