State Police mourn death of veteran K-9 Niko
Louisiana State Police lost a partner Friday (April 22) afternoon when LSP K-9 Niko died after being diagnosed with terminal cancer a week ago according to State Police. Authorities said Niko spent her last days at home with her handler and his family “who loved her dearly. Born in 2005, police said Niko has been a State Trooper since 2007. She was assigned to State Police’s Troop A in Baton Rouge for almost a decade.She and her handler, Senior Trooper Jason Romain, were responsible for seizing millions of dollars in illegal drugs. They are also responsible for the arrest of hundreds of “violators,” and thus they led the state in drug seizures. Authorities said she earned first place several times in K-9 competitions statewide. Niko was also part of the Criminal Patrols Team of the year. State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson said the K-9 “was a very special and valuable part of our LSP family.” He stressed that they would be “forever grateful” for her contributions to their agency and Louisiana’s safety. “Niko was a Trooper and wore her badge with pride as she served the citizens of Louisiana,” he said.
