Morden’s first Canine PSD Chase passes away
Morden’s first Canine Police Service Dog, Chase has passed away, after retiring from her service last Spring. MPS Chief Brad Neduzak shared his thoughts. “It is indeed a sad day here for all of us to see Chase gone. She obviously not only from the working standpoint, having served our community and a great ambassador and a great canine, but holds a special place in our hearts because she was our first ever canine for Morden Police Service.” Neduzak extended his gratitude for her service. “So indeed, a sad day, but we are so glad we were able to give her a proper tribute and send off on her retirement not so long ago here. We’re very happy for that and we just are thrilled with the service that Chase was able to provide to us and our community.” He touched on her impact in the community. “Obviously the community has always been behind us and our canine program right from the get-go. I think when Chase arrived here, prior to her getting her name Chase, we got the community involved and the schools involved in the naming contest. So, I think the community was also very attached to her and she was a big part of everybody’s lives.” When Chase arrived in Morden she was Constable Adam Hiebert’s partner, but after he left MPS, Sgt Scott Edwards took on the role as handler and partner. “A very big thank you to Sergeant Edwards for his commitment to our canine program and to Chase. Not only was he her handler but was part of their family too and a big shout out and a thank you to Scott’s wife and his children too, because Chase was obviously with them and at their residence and was a big part of their family. They were all part of looking after her in one way or another, so, thank you to everybody there in the Edwards family.” Sgt Edwards gave this statement about Chase’s passing and the outpouring of support they have received from the community. “Chase had an incredible amount of energy and drive but could quickly flip into a softy when someone showed her the slightest bit of attention. There were many people in this community that played a role in Chase’s life, and I’d like to thank them for that. My family and I feel fortunate to have been a part of her life and appreciate all the messages of support with her passing.” Retired Police Service Dog Chase diedon January 15, 2023 at the age of 12. Chase was born July 11, 2010 and became the first K9 member in MPS history when she worked her first shift in the fall of 2011. Chase was a dual-purpose K9 specializing in drug detection and quickly became part of the team at MPS. Chase touched many lives as a community ambassador for our Service, and worked almost 11 years before retiring June 1, 2022. Not only was Chase a dedicated partner, but she was a part of our police family.Thank you for your service – rest easy Chase.
