Sheriff’s K-9, Lorcan, Loses Battle with Leukemia

On Tuesday, Union County Sheriff Joseph Cryan announced the passing of K9 Lorcan, who lost his brief battle with leukemia. Lorcan’s partner was Sheriff’s Officer Ryan Wilson. Lorcan was a German Shepherd born on February 21, 2007, in the Czech Republic. He joined the Union County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit in May 2009. He was a dual trained patrol and narcotics detection K-9 handled by Officer Wilson. Together they conducted narcotic searches for illegal drugs, building searches for suspects hiding, and tracked for criminals or missing persons. Lorcan was also trained in apprehension and handler protection.
Since they were partnered together in 2009, they conducted 224 patrol searches for suspects resulting in numerous apprehensions and 238 narcotics searches resulting in over a thousand pounds of illegal drugs seized. “K9 Lorcan did his job well, and we thank him for service,” said Sheriff Cryan. “We extend our condolences to Officer Wilson and our canine unit, where these dogs are much more than an animal, they are partners in service and in family. We will add K9 Lorcan to our canine plaque of service, located at our Summit canine unit facilty, at a later date.”
