Swati, after 8 yrs of service, dies
Swati, a police dog, 12, died after a heart attack on Monday. A labrador, Swati was born on September 1, 2011, and was donated to the police department by Ashok Baragundi, a
retired engineer of Gadag, on January 1, 2013. Its skills in detecting explosive materials earned Swati many laurels. Gadag district superintendent of police Shivaprakash Devaraju has stated that after getting trained at the Police Dog Squad Training Centre in Bengaluru for 10 months, it had the pride of being deployed in security duty for the President of India, Prime Minister, Union home minister, several chief ministers and several VVIPs. It was also in the security team of the 8th Brics summit held in Goa. “Swati had served on Sunday when RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat visited Gadag,” he stated. He further said, “It has played a major role in cracking 95 different cases in the state.” The SP and other officials offered their last respects to the body and one round was fired in the air as a token of respect. Many police personnel, especially constables MS Kumbar and NR Kandagal, who were the dog’s trainers, were inconsolable.
