K9 Hades – East Hartford, Connecticut

The Connecticut Police Work Dog Association (CPWDA) is sad to announce the passing of K9 Hades who was partnered with Officer Steve Grossi with the East Hartford Police Department. K9 Hades died of cancer on 11/18/21. Officer Grossi and K9 Hades joined the CPWDA on 1/1/13 and became Lifetime Members on 1/4/14. Officer Grossi and K9 Hades were the 1ST Runner Up recipients of the prestigious Daniel Wasson Memorial K9 Award in 2015 and were also the 2nd Runner Up recipients of the prestigious Daniel Wasson Memorial K9 Award in 2013. Officer Steve Grossi and K9 Hades also won the Dream Ride Police K-9 Challenge in 2017 in Connecticut. The Dream Ride K-9 Challenge is a premiere competition showcasing the extensive training of Police K-9 handlers and their working dogs. Officer Grossi and K9 Hades demonstrate their incredible talent, skill, and obedience through an obedience skills test, obstacle course, and suspect apprehension. K9 Hades was certified in Patrol.

Officer Grossi joined the CPWDA with his first K9, Odin, on 9/8/07 and was a member with K9 Odin until 12/31/12. K9 Odin passed away on 10/24/15.

CPWDA sends our thoughts and prayers to Officer Grossi, his family, the entire East Hartford Police Department & friends during this difficult time. We know that the Rainbow Bridge is now well protected with K9 Hades and K9 Odin. Only green fields to run now and play time and peace always. K9 Hades we thank you for your service. R.I.P.

James A. Cortina has been involved with police dogs since 1972 and currently on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association Inc. Jim has been appointed as Treasurer since its inception in 1991. Jim is one of the charter members of the C.P.W.D.A. organization. Since 1975 he has been a certified professional dog trainer and received his Master Trainer Certification in 1985. During his career he has provided armed K-9 strike crowd control for security agencies in Connecticut and out of state security companies. In conjunction with other members of the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association Inc. Board of Directors, he helped to draft Connecticut Statute 53-247(e) "Intentional Injury or Killing of Police K-9" which was passed by the Senate in 1993 and also assisted in implementing the prestigious Daniel Wasson Memorial K-9 Award in 1992. In 1993 he helped coordinate the North American Police Work Dog Association Nationals in New London, Connecticut. He was appointed Training Director for the New London County Work Dog Association from 1985-1987. He performed decoy work for Connecticut Police Work Dog Association Inc. in police K-9 demonstrations, trained several local police department canines, and coordinated training workshops for out-of-state police departments. He participated in the United States Police K-9 Association Trials in Croton on Hudson, New York in 1985 as a decoy. He is an avid photographer and received photography awards in 1989, 1990, and 1991 and currently takes photographs for the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association Inc.
