Handker – Deputy Roberts

On May 4, 2021 EDSO retired K-9 Bakus was put to rest at the age of 15-1/2, 2-1/2 years past the average life expectancy of his breed. (Belgian Malinois) Bakus enjoyed a long career, which started with Deputy Mike Roberts in July of 2008. Over his 8 ½ year career Bakus had 17 physical apprehensions, (bites), of violent felons including a murder suspect, carjacking suspect, drug traffickers, wanted fugitives, and burglars. Bakus had more than 200 non-physical apprehensions, (no-bite surrenders). Bakus made more than 100 narcotics finds and identified more than $150,000 in drug money. Bakus was awarded the Mother Lode Lions Officer of the Year twice in 2009 and in 2013. Bakus also participated in countless community demonstrations including EDSO Citizen’s Academies, local businesses, local schools, Red Ribbon Week, and many more. Bakus retired in December of 2016 after 8 1/2 years of service. After retirement, Bakus spent his days lounging at home, looking after the family while his partner was gone at work. Bakus enjoyed playing with his friends, a Shih Tzu named Ozzy and a French Bulldog named Diva. Bakus was a loyal K-9 partner for Deputy Roberts and he was a great family dog with him after retirement. Bakus will always be remembered as one of EDSO’s great K-9’s. Thank you for your service Bakus. Rest in Peace!
