TRUE HEROES
When I think of a True HERO, I think of the best
Those that wear the bullet proof vest
They endure smoke, danger, fire and flame
They have police, fire or sheriff in their title and name
They are our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marine
And not the athletes on our favorite sport team
Those we can admire for their achievements and skill
But their job doesn’t require them to die or to kill
There’s entertainment and magic in how they move a ball
But they don’t save our lives or answer our emergency call
True heroes care for others before their own need
They work at high risk without personal greed
We don’t pay them millions; when it’s what they deserve
When we count all their sacrifices and many ways they serve
They protect our flag, borders and prisons and our wildlife too
Our families and pets are safer because of what they do
And many have partners who serve them not by hand but by paw
A double hero status protecting our freedom and law
They deserve so much more, in respect and in pay
And lifetime veterinary benefits for their partners who
“Faithfully, Lead the Way”
Their bond never broken; bad guys and enemies beware
We have more peace and sleep better because they are there
Let’s give them honor and appreciation and value what they do
Reserve the pedestal for them – our Heroes so true.

TRIBUTE TO K-9 LAW ENFORCEMENT DOGS
There is no greater TRUST than the one created by the bond between K9 law-enforcement working dogs and their deputy or police handler. There is no greater LOYALTY than these dogs who would lay down their lives for their partners and for you and me if called on to do so in the line of duty; there is no greater COMFORT and ASSURANCE in public trust and safety to know that is truth and can always be counted on.
There is no greater cheetah-like SPEED, to
OBEDIENCE than by these dogs who respond to their partner’s commands to words
that need only be said once.
There is no better way to HONOR these dogs than to acknowledge, appreciate and
respect them and their partners, both together in service for our safety, and to
remember those partners lost together and forever to us and their families.
There is no better way to PAY them back than to treat all dogs a little kinder – a little gentler and with more compassion: those who serve our military in war, guard our beaches, serve our customs officers at our borders, our firefighters who save lives and property, our agriculture agencies to safeguard our food, our rescue dogs who aid in disaster or in loss of children or elderly, our assistance dogs who see and hear for us, predict our diseases and alert our seizures giving us freedom to work, drive and swim; those who are abused, exploited and cruelty treated for profit or criminal intent, those who provide therapy to heal us faster, comfort our needs, teach us to read and warn us of danger, and those who listen to our stories when we are sad and share our joy when we laugh; who give us friendship and companionship like no other; and those in all animal shelters who were born unwanted, were neglected, abandoned and wait for a new and forever home.
There is no greater nose to scent, eyes to sight, heart to give and no braver or more courageous spirit to work and serve. Of these K-9 Working Dogs also can be attributed the highest form of sacrifice by man “greater love hath no man than to give up his life for another”. For every dog that bites us, there is one of these – a special, elite and best of their breed. For them Heaven’s reward is a special section across the Rainbow Bridge reserved only for them where they play all day in meadows where angels sing; and they never again hear the sound of another bullet. They are the very special select ones whose life as a hero dog on earth represented the highest in VALOR. May they and their partners always be blessed and watched over by our Creator who you will find always in their name only backwards. barbara snow www.humanesocietyofpinellas.org

K-9 Heroes, A Veteran by barbara snow

How many more names would be on that Wall?
Were it not for you – you heeded our country's call
You served and you bled thru all our war years
Many of you died with only a handler's tears
Your duties are many, you scent and you track
Your eyes tell me always, "I've got your back"
You rescue and save lives and when that’s in vain
You recover to bring closure to a family’s pain
You outsmart our enemies – it's you that they fear
You warn me when mines and explosives are near
You guard our beaches and borders and our Commander-in-Chief
Words “Stop, or I’ll release my dog” mean it’s over for a thief
Your eyes burned in Oklahoma City, your paws felt the flame
You brought me a small shoe – I moaned. “Oh God, No,” in pain
You comforted me for a moment; you nudged me on too
You knew we weren’t finished; we had more to do
You pull me to safety; you bring me a medic’s care
I open my eyes and know that you’re there
You have honor and spirit and feel our country’s pride
Sometimes in the night, only you knew I cried
I wish you had time to just run and play
Catch a Frisbee and swim – for a dog, a good day
But you are a Trooper, to duty you must
My life before yours - you give me that trust
No matter how clever an arsonist’s M. O.
Your nose tell investigators what they need to know
Some call you Coastie, you get “Semper Fi’’
The chute makes you perk – you love when we fly
As an Officer and Deputy, it’s crime that you fight
You wear the badge of the elite – “Guardians of the Night”
The love of a mascot knows no race, class or ranks
Privates, Admirals, Generals all give you their thanks
When you outlive me and Taps reaches your ears
You stand there with honor among bagpipes and tears
When your bones become old and you no longer serve
It’s medical care in retirement you earned and deserve.
Congress could pass a law to resolve this need
For all serving and in memory, for them I now plead
We must call you ‘Veteran’ for you are one too
No honor for me, if there is none for you
Till death do us part, this mantra rings true
They gave and give all for the Red White and Blue.

========================================================================================================
An American War Dog
I am an American war dog
I obey orders from my brave handler
My job is to find, save, help and comfort
I try to do the best that I can
Being faithful is everything to me
Staying alert, I must always be
When my name is called out
Proudly I stand to serve with love
I so try to do what is asked of me
If I die on duty, please remember
I am an American war dog
And my brave handler is my best friend
God gave me a life to love and give
And to be there when
there is need
The time may come for my duty to end
And I will proudly
be a K9 Corp Veteran
It will be hard for me to stop serving
I'll want to continue, but know
I cannot
Remember those like me who don't go to war
Many have
duties that are so very important
I am an American war dog
And I have the best friend in the
world!

MY
PASSION FOR THIS SITE
Birth
of website - June 1999
After
being around the funeral business for many years and still
doing
personalized prayer cards for funeral directors, I felt a need
to do
something for the K-9 & SAR Corps & War Dogs. Each time a
funeral for a working dog,
killed
in the line of duty, (or of natural causes) is on the television
news, or in the newspapers,
I
felt this passion.
As a
result, I made this website. I wanted to supply cards for the K-9
heroes.
Who
has given his/her life for an officer in the line of duty, has
fallen in search of humans
during disasters, has
guided and protected his master who is impaired.
A
simple
card for everyone who attends his honorable funeral or memorial service.
*A
card to insert with 'thank you' notes for donations received from those
who care,
be
officers
or civilians.
A card
to give to friends to keep in remembrance of him/her.
A card
to support the family who watched one get old and retire, and hopefully
die of natural causes,
or
having
the courage to make the final decision for them.
Because
they gave their all,
as long as they were able.
To
give
an officer and his family the needed support
in their time of sorrow.
To
honor
an officer and "best friend, and partner."
*When
monetary donations are sent in memory of partner's best friend,
which
help cover the expense of a young, newly trained K9.
Cost
may range any where from $7,000 to more than $10,000.
REALIZATION
After
donating cards and constantly up dating the loss of these marvelous
animals over the years,
I
finally
have come to realize the following:
I know
now that I rarely can be notified in time to get cards to the
memorial or funeral services
for the partners of the K-9s.
I also
realize that I cannot afford to donate the number of cards
needed
for all those who attend these services, 200 to 300.....
As
this
website has taken a 'life of its own' I am reminded of the SAR, the
military.
The
WAR K-9s have also given their lives & are heroes. I added a link
about
these War Dogs.
I also
have become so aware of the unselfish SAR handlers, years before
Sept.
11, 2001.
The
Search & Rescue handlers are always there to help.
They
don't receive any compensation
for their equipment, upkeep of animals,
or time.
If
they
are lucky, their employers do not 'dock'
their paycheck for time used away
from the job.
"I
will
not give up on donations as long as I am able."
-
SO -
As
long
as I am aware of these heroes, no matter if they leave us in the line
of
duty,
or
luckily
of old age & natural causes, I will do my best.
A
special
thanks to the funeral directors, pet shops, pet cemeteries, pet people
who
purchase my cards, and also the group of veterinarians who order my
cards
to insert
with
their sympathy cards, who say they receive so many thank you notes and
calls..
These
orders give me the funds to donate to others.
I send
laminated and non laminated cards.
If available, I put the photo of the
K-9 on one side of the card.
I truly am relentless in trying to
obtain photos.
I send
by PRIORITY mail, or regular
depending on circumstances. (I
sincerely
appreciate receiving e-mails or notes if I have helped yourpain.)
I
DO need help from you as to who, where, and when & how? I need
addresses of the Police,
Sheriff & SAR location to mail.
Please
e-mail any information at all!
