kills K-9, Injures Handler
On
October 12, 2000 at approximately 0238 hours, deputies responded to the
area of Massachusetts Avenue and Kelly Avenue in reference to an armed
suspicious person call. Deputies made contact with a Yellow Cab driver
who advised that he had picked up a white male subject at the Conoco station
at N. "W" Street and Beverly Parkway. The male pulled a handgun on the
cab driver and made statements he was on a rampage then fled North into
a residential area, Court.
(ESCAMBIA
COUNTY, Fla.) - A sheriff's deputy was wounded and his K-9 partner of 16
months killed in an early morning shoot out with a suspect who was killed
after pulling out a handgun and firing as deputies tried to arrest him,
police said. The incident began at approximately 2:40 AM Thursday when
deputies received a report of a suspicious, armed man in the 600 block
of Palm Court. After a K-9 team was sent to the area, the suspect, Gregory
Allen Kidd, 32, was cornered. As deputies attempted to place him under
arrest Kidd pulled out a handgun and began firing, police said. The identity
of the deputy who shot Kidd has not been released. Deputy 1st Class Mike
Mayne, who did not fire his weapon, received a gunshot wound to the leg
and

remains
in Baptist Hospital. Mayne's dog, Erny, a three-year-old German Shepherd
was shot and later died in an emergency veterinary clinic. Autopsies on
the suspect and the police dog are being conducted today. As is standard
in shooting incidents, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
Deputy
Mike Mayne responded with his K-9 Erny. Deputy Mayne began tracking the
subject, with Deputy Kevin Coxwell providing backup during the track. At
0338 hours, Deputy Mayne continued the track and located the individual
lying in tall grass in a fenced lot behind 622 Palm Deputy Mayne and Coxwell
ordered the subject to surrender and show his hands. When the subject failed
to do so, K-9 Erny was deployed followed closely by the officers who attempted
to take the subject into custody. The subject pulled a handgun and fired
on the officers. One round struck Deputy Mayne in the right lower leg.
A second round struck K-9 Erny killing him. Deputy Coxwell returned fire
at the subject with his service Sig Sauer .40 caliber pistol. The suspect
was hit and pronounced dead at the scene. A Deputy Mayne was transported
by EMS to Baptist Hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound. He is in
good condition. An autopsy has been conducted and the identity of
the suspect has been made using fingerprints. He is identified as Gregory
Allen Kidd of Pensacola. Kidd was currently wanted by the Escambia County
Sheriff's Office for Robbery with a weapon and Possession of a weapon by
a convicted felon. He was further suspected of having committed other area
robberies in recent weeks. Kidd has an extensive history of violent crime
and has been incarcerated in state prison on several occasions. Deputy
Mike Mayne has been employed by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office for
eleven years. He is currently assigned to the Patrol division working out
of the Warrington precinct on midnight shift. K-9 Erny was 3 years old
and had been partnered with Deputy Mayne since May 1999. Deputy Kevin
Coxwell has been employed by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office for two
years. He is currently assigned to the Patrol division working out of the
Warrington precinct on midnight shift. Deputy Coxwell has been placed on
paid administrative leave which is standard sheriff's office policy. The
Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead investigative agency.
The sheriff's office will be conducting a separate but parallel investigation
of the shooting. K-9 Erny is the second patrol to be shot and killed in
the line of duty. In March 1998 K-9 Wolf was shot and killed as he apprehended
a car thief who had fled into a wooded area. The suspect in that case was
arrested as he exited the wood lot when pursued by the Sheriff's Office
SWAT Team.

by Sgt.
Dan Johnson
Currently,
I am waiting for the next class to open for another K-9 partner. I know
there needs to be a cool down time between dogs, but it has been a long
winter. My new partner's name is "KASPER." He is waiting at the school,
detector dogs International in Iowa now. Kasper will be the third dog I
have put into service. He should be in service for 10 years, figuring I
double the service life each time. Thank you for all the things you have
sent. Everyone at home and in the department enjoyed them.
Thanks again,
SERGEANT

The
Boone County Sheriffs Department said good bye
By WHITNEY
FRIEDLANDER, Missourian staff Dept.
October
30, 2000
The
Boone County Sheriff’s Department said good bye to one of its most loyal
members — as well as one of its furriest — on Thursday. Akah, a member
of the K-9 patrol who had been with the Sheriff’s Department for five years,
died Thursday from cancer. Born in Germany, this German Shepherd came to
Columbia when he was little more than a year old, to live with his owner
and handler, Sgt. Dan Johnson of the Sheriff’s Johnson said Akai was better
than any of the dog characters in the movies who portrayed his job, such
as in “Turner and Hooch.” “He didn’t make as much money, but he was better,”
Johnson said. “He was very social and loved being around people."
Despite his love for affection, Johnson said Akah knew how to get the job
done. “Nobody wanted to run away from him,” Johnson said. “He’s too big.
Still, every time I said stop, he’d stop.” Akai was trained in drug detection,
handler protection, apprehension and tracking missing persons. “He was
definitely a dual purpose dog,” Johnson said. With the loss of Akah, the
Boone County Sheriff’s Department is down to one K-9 unit, a Belgian Tervuren
named Tarko, who was also born in Germany. Both dogs had “been very active
and instrumental in the success of numerous incidents over the past several
years,” officials said in a press release Friday. Johnson said he will
get another dog in January when the training session for police dogs starts
again. Akah was cremated and will be buried at Johnson’s home. Donations
to the department for the purchase of a new police dog may be sent to 2121
County Drive, Columbia, MO, 65202. Sheriff’s Department dog will
be missed.

Boss
was donated to us in 1992. He was originally rescued by Stan Twodeers.
Stan was the original president of Rottweiler Rescue of Tulsa. Stan
was killed north of Tulsa on highway 75. Boss and Bubba were in the van
and watched Stan being murdered. For a long time you could not pick
up a stick around Boss because Stan was beaten to death. Stan taught
all his dogs in Cherokee. I did not speak Cherokee and Boss didn't speak
English but I need to use a choke chain and he learned. We introduced
Boss to SAR soon after we had him. He was approximately 7 years old.
He was certified in 1994 through Oklahoma K9 Search and Rescue. We
joined Heartland Search and Rescue in 1996. Boss was retired in 1999.
He was finally recognized by the Oklahoma Veterinarian Association on January
22, 2000. Boss worked on the Ossie Decatur case in Tulsa, and numerous
missing person cases in Oklahoma. Boss was put down, (euthanized)
October 21, 2000. He had inoperable Cancer. He died peacefully in my arms.
He hated two things; fighting and guns. He is now resting under his
favorite Peach tree in our yard, watching the cows that he loved playing.
